Start With A Pregnancy Test

A late or missed period is one of the very first signs of a possible pregnancy, but as you can see, there are many other symptoms. Start by taking a pregnancy test to determine whether you are pregnant.

Although a pregnancy test indicates a possible pregnancy, it doesn’t confirm the pregnancy is viable (growing). It’s possible to get a positive pregnancy test even though you’ve miscarried because it takes a woman’s body time to return to pre-pregnancy hormone levels after a miscarriage.

Your next step is to get an ultrasound if your pregnancy test is positive.

How Does a Pregnancy Test Work?

When a woman becomes pregnant, her body begins producing a pregnancy hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This hormone builds rapidly and eventually enters her blood and urine stream.

A urine pregnancy test detects hCG in a woman’s urine to determine if she’s pregnant.

When Should I Take A Pregnancy Test?

Because the build-up of hCG takes time, you should wait to take your first test. Medical experts suggest waiting until the first day after your missed period.

Follow these suggestions for taking an over-the-counter pregnancy test:

  • Always check the expiration date on the test.
  • Wait at least until the first day of your missed period.
  • Take the test in the morning when your urine is most concentrated.
  • Wait the recommended amount of time before reading the results.
  • Take another test in 3 or 4 days to confirm the results.
